Photographer Description of Mangonui

Panorama taken from the shoreline in Mangonui. This picture shows a view over Doubtless Bay from in front of a hotel at Mangonui, overlooking the narrow strait that joins Mill Bay and Mangonui Harbour. A number of boats and yachts can be seen on the water, and the famous fish restaurant is built on a jetty.

Mangonui - Further Information

Mangonui is a small and peaceful settlement on Doubtless Bay in New Zealand. Monganui was once a whaling station, and contains several important historic buildings from the era. These can be seen by following the Monganui Heritage Trail (details available from the Doubtless Bay Information Centre). The sea front is lined with old hotels, cafes and restaurants, the most famous of which is the Fish and Chip restaurant partially built on a jetty and overlooking the sea.

Mangonui is an ideal base from which to explore the surrounding area. Just outside Mangonui is Rangikapiti Pa a Maori hill fort, from which you get great views over Doubtless Bay. Mangonui is close to Coopers Beach, Cable Bay and Taipa Beach. It is also near the base of the Aupouri Peninsula, and is a good starting point for those wishing to travel to Cape Reinga.
