Kaitaia rests at the base of the Aupouri Peninsula, in the far north of the Northland region of New Zealand, near the southern end of 90 Mile Beach. It is the last sizeable settlement before Cape Reinga, 110 km to the north. As over 200,000 people visit Cape Reingna each year, over 1000 vehicles a day pass this area at peak season. Kaitaia has developed to serve this stream of visitors and contains numerous hotels, motels, motor lodges and the like.

Kaitaia is on Highway 1, about 50 km north of the Hokianga Harbour region and 40km west of Mangonui on Doubtless Bay.
