Kohukohu - FURTHER INFORMATION
Kohukohu - The Hokianga visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Kohukohu' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Northland.
Kohukohu is a small settlement on the northern shore of Hokianga Harbour where it splits into the Mangamuka River and Waihou River branches. It contains a thriving arts and crafts community and the main street through the town is lined with several art galleries showing local work. Kohukohu is close to the Hokianga Harbour Ferry's northern landing site at The Narrows, and most of the traffic passes through the village en route for the car ferry and Rawene on the southern shore.
Kohukohu is a pleasant rest stop on a car journey through Northland. There is (at time of writing) a lovely small cafe built partially on stilts with panoramic views over Hokianga Harbour, and it is easy to relax here, browse the galleries and refresh before continuing onwards. For those wishing to stay and explore the area, Kohukohu has various backpackers, cottages, and bed & breakfast accommodation available.
The first Europeans arrived here in 1819, and Kohukohu became the center of the timber trade, reaching a population of 1000 at one point. Today about 150 people live in the village itself, with several hundred more in the small settlements of Mata, Motukaraka, Mata, Pikiparia, Tauteihiihi and Te Karae nearby.
