Ngunguru - FURTHER INFORMATION
Ngunguru - Whangarei visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Ngunguru' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Northland.
Ngunguru lies at the mouth of the Ngunguru River on the Ngunguru Estuary in Northland region of New Zealand. It is quite close to Whangarei and considered one of the hidden secrets of Northland. The Ngunguru Sandspit on the other side of the river is an important local nature reserve. When the Europeans first arrived there was a thriving Māori population in the area. In 1838 the sandspit was the scene of a major battle between the Te Waiariki and the Southern tribes and in 1930 an Easter storm washed away sands revealing what appeared to be human remains.
