The Smith Wing of the Kauri Museum shows some of the machinery used in the kauri timber industry. Kauri timber trade was fundamental to the early European settlement of tracts of Northland in New Zealand. Many of the small villages in the region, like Kohukohu and Rawene owe their existence to kauri timber. Much of the work was manual and very hard. Kauri trees could be several meters in diameter and tens of meters high. They would be cut down and sectioned by hand in the forest before being dragged back to processing yards. The Smith Wing shows some of the tools and machienery used, as well as samples of kauri logs.
