Maungataniwha Range - FURTHER INFORMATION
Maungataniwha Range - The Hokianga visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Maungataniwha Range' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Northland.
Maungataniwha Range separates Kaitaia and Okaihau in Northland of New Zealand from the rest of the country to the south. The range is densely forested and an important reserve for both kauri trees and wildlife. Much of the settlement of Northland by Europeans was through the kauri timber industry (see the Kauri Museum). Maungataniwha Range is known locally as the Mangamukas, after a settlement on the southern side of the range. Further north is the Aupouri Peninsula and to the south is Hokianga Harbour.
State Highway 1 crosses the Maungataniwha Range. The road is one of the windiest roads in the whole of New Zealand, and was only sealed in 1961. It is now the preferred route between Whangarei to Kaitaia. The route is slow, not only due to the terrain, but also due to the volume of traffic heading north through here during the high season. There are few places for traffic to pass, but the scenery is dramatic. The Mangamuka Gorge Tramping Tack passes through the forest at this point.
