St Augustine Church - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
Panorama taken inside St Augustine Catholic Church in Waikiki. The inside of the church is quite dark, which just makes the stained glass windows stand out all the more.

St Augustine Church is a Catholic community within the heart of Waikiki on Oahu island in Hawai'i. The church building is quite recent, replacing an earlier structure which was built in 1901. Today the church and community serve both local residents and the vast numbers of tourists who visit Waikiki each year. The church is near to Kuhio Beach and the northern end of Kapiolani Regional Park.
For mass times see the St Augustine Church site.
The first priests arrived in Hawaii from France in 1927. Local opposition to them grew and between 1831 and 1839 Hawaiian Catholics were denied their basic religious rights. Those caught practicing their faith were sentenced to hard labour and mssionary priests were exiled. During this time the believers met in private homes. In 1839 an edict ended the persecution and the Waikiki Catholics came out of hiding, building a temporary chapel of coconut fronds and bits of drift wood. A more permanent structure was erected in 1901.
