Waimea Bay Beach Park is on the North Shore of Oahu in Hawaii, a short way east of Haliewa, between Kawailoa Beach and Pupukea Beach Park.
The beach and bay are set back from the coastline in a small bay. The headlands offer good protection during the summer months, when the beach is popular with swimmers. However, during the winter months, these headlands funnel the waves into the beach and some of the largest surf on North Shore is found here. At that time swimming in Waimea Bay can be fatal as the bay suffers from strong rip tides. Waimea Bay has some of the largest surfable waves in the world, but only the most experienced should try to surf them. 30 foot surf is quite common, and even the inshore break can be 12 feet high.
The beach park at Waimea Bay has picnic areas, showers, restrooms and public phones. Around Waimea Bay are a couple of ancient sites, Kupopolo Heiau and Puuomahkua Heiau, which may be worth a visit. Waimea Valley and Adventure Park is a popular attraction within the Waimea Valley behind the beach park. Waimea Bay the location of some of the filming for 'Lost'. The plane crash site for the series was at Mokuleia Beach, which is further west towards Kaena Point State Park.
TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE
Waiamea Bay Beach Park is about 4.5 miles from Haleiwa on the 83 (Kamehameha Hwy). Parking in the Beach Park car park is limited and often full. Excess parking happens along the road west of the bay.
