Sunset Beach is about 2 miles long, it is broken into Sunset Beach Park and Sunset Point Beach Park and runs along the North Shore of Oahu in Hawaii. Sunset Beach is one of the most popular surfing spots on Oahu during the winter months, when surf regularly reaches 20 feet plus. It is close to the world famous Banzai Pipeline. During the summer months the water is relatively calm and very clear, making Sunset beach popular for swimming and snorkeling. The beach also has numerous large tidal pools full of fish and other wildlife.
The original Hawaiian name for Sunset Beach is 'Paumalū'. Various international surfing competitions take place here including the Duke Kahanamoku Classic surfing competition, the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing competition, and, occasionally, the Quiksilver Big Wave Invitational.
Sunset Beach forms a section of a 4 mile stretch of sandy beaches on North Shore. Beginning with Banzai Beach just north of Kalalua Point, this sandy strip continues through Sunset Beach Park, Sunset Point Beach, Kaunala Beach, Waialee Beach Park and Pahipahialua Beach ending up at Kawela Bay.
