Mokuauia Seabird Sanctuary (Goat Island) is about 400 yards off shore from Kalanai Point, which separates Laie Bay from Malaekahana Bay on the Windward Coast of Oahu in Hawaii. The 13 acre island has a maximum elevation of 15 feet. Apart from the leeward beach, which can be waded out to at low tide, much of the island is bird sanctuary, home to at least 10 species of native sea birds and closed to the public. It is part of the Malaekahana State Recreational Area. According to Hawaiian legend, Mokuauia was created when the demigods Kana and Niheu killed a giant lizard and threw the pieces into the sea.
