Santa Maria di Castello is the oldest church in Udine. The current church is Romanesque, dating from the 12th century, but archaeological evidence, including pieces of a 'Christ Logos' would suggest the first church on the site might date from the Lombards in the 7th century. The façade of Santa Maria di Castello was added by Gaspare Negro early 16th century. He also started work on the bell tower, which was finished by Giovanni da Udine in 1539. At the top, 43m above the ground, is a weather vane in the form of a large angel.
On the inside, Santa Maria di Castello has a single nave separated from the aisles by four stone columns. The walls and apse are decorated with old frescoes.
