The Musikverein is a traditional concert hall in the heart of Vienna. It contains the Great (Golden) Musikverein hall, the Goldener Saal shown in this panorama, often considered to be one of the best sounding music halls in the world along with Boston's Symphony Hall and Amsterdam's Concertgebouw. The Musikverein was built by the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde (Society of Friends of Music) on land given by Emperor Franz Joseph opposite the Charles Church in 1863 and opened in 1870.
The Großer Musikvereinsaal, or Goldener Saal (Golden Hall), is the most famous part of the Musikverein. Measuring 48m long, 19m wide and 18m high, it seats 1,744 people seats with standing room for a further 300. The famous Vienna New Year's Concert is held within the hall every year on January 1.
The Musikverein stands near the Konzerthaus and Karlskirche.
