Carolus Borromeus Church - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
The interior of the Carolus Borromeus Church is almost as impressive as its façade. In the past the church was referred to as 'the marble temple' Unfortunately the church was struck by lightning on 18 July 1718. Miraculously the apse of the main altar and the Mary Chapel survived. Sadly Rubens' 39 ceiling paintings went up in smoke.

Carolus Borromeus Church stands on the eastern side of Hendrik Conscienceplein in Antwerp. It is a Baroque church with a spectacular facade, built by the Jesuits between 1615 and 1621. Local artist Peter Paul Rubens contributed designs for much of the interior as well as the façade and the tower. The imposting facade, built as a statement against the rise of protestantism at the time, is based on Il Gesu in Rome, the First Jesuit church. One of the most unique features about the church is the mechanised interchangeable painting hanging above the altar.
