Hermannsburg is an Aboriginal community 131km southwest of Alice Springs with a population of about 500. Hermannsburg was established in 1877 as an Aboriginal mission by two Lutheran missionaries from Germany.
In 1902 the artist Albert Namatjira was born in Hermannsburg.
In 1982 the mission land was handed over to traditional ownership. In 2006 the historic precinct was included in the Australian National Heritage List.
