The world famous Hofbraeuhaus in Munich

The Hofbräuhaus opened in 1607 and is now one of the most popular tourist attractions in Munich and one of the most famous beer halls in Germany. It was originally built as an extension of the Hofbräu brewery for Weissbier (wheat beer). In 1897 the brewery moved to the suburbs and the Hofbräuhaus was extensively remodeled. The brewery was orignally set up in 1592 to provide brown ale for Wilhelm V., Duke of Bavaria, who did not like the local produce and had become tired of importing beer from Einbeck in Lower Saxony.

In 1920 Adolf Hitler held the first of many events at the Munich Hofbräuhaus, outlining his twenty-five point programme which was to become the basis of the Nazi Party. During WWII the Hofbräuhaus was bombed, destroying everything but the Schwemme (ground floor). It was rebuilt in 1958.

Today the Hofbräuhaus contains an inn, beer garden and dance hall. The restaurant served traditional Bavarian food and has live music. All of the beer still comes from the Staatliches Hofbräuhaus brewery.
