Munich (München) is the capital city of the Bavaria region of Germany. The city motto is 'München mag Dich' (Munich likes you), and this thriving city in southern Germany has much to offer the visitor. The name derives from the old German for Mönche (Monk), and a monk is displayed on the coat of arms.

The first recorded mention of Munich dates back to 1158 when a bridge was built over the Isar river next to a monastery. In 1506, Munich became the capital of Bavaria. The city suffered greatly during wwI and WWII. When the National Socialist Workers Party (Nazis) took power in Germany in 1933, Munich was referred to as the 'Capital of the Movement' and location of the NSDAP headquarters, with many Führerbauten (Führer-buildings) built around the Königsplatz. As a result of this, Munich was heavily bombed during the war.
