The dam in Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden protects Kane'ohe from flooding. Behind it lies the Loko Wamaluhia reservoir, a lake that covers some 32 acres. Beside the dam are large water overflow slipways. These take excess water falling on the Ko'olau Range to the west away from the town and offer flood protection to this part of east Oahu. Another good vantage point within the gardens is the Kilonani Mauka Overlook.
