The Valley of the Temples Memorial Park is on the Windward side of Oahu in Hawaii, set in a valley of the Ko'olau mountains near to Kane'ohe.
The park contains the famous Byodo-In Temple, built in the 1960's to commemorate the arrival of the first Japanese to the sugar plantations of Hawaii. It is a replica of the 900 year old Buddhist temple in Uji, on the outskirts of Kyoto in Japan. The Byodo-In Temple contains a 9 ft Buddha sitting on a gold leaf lotus. It is also known as the 'Phoenix Temple' due to two metal phoenixes along the top ends of the main temple building. Beside the temple is a 5-foot, three-ton brass Peace Bell. The Byodo-In Temple is now a major tourist attraction in Hawaii, and it's popularity has increased since it was used as a filming location during the making of 'Lost'.
The rest of Valley of the Temples Memorial Park is a cemetery, with thousands of of people from all faiths buried here. Throughout the grounds are numerous chapels and temples around which the various faithful are interred. Here you will find Roman Catholic statues depicting Jesus' suffering and crypts and mausoleums of some of the most influential people in Hawai'i.
