Parenzana - FURTHER INFORMATION
Parenzana - Parenzana visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Parenzana' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Istra.
La Parenzana is a now disused narrow gauge railway that covered 123km from Trieste in Italy, through Slovenia ending in Poreč in Croatia. La Parenzana is known as 'Porečanka' or 'Poreška' in Slovenian and 'Porečka' in Croatian.
La Parenzana was built in the fading years of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, an in use between 1902 and 1935, mainly to transport agricultural produce. All the track has been removed, but much of the infrastructure, bridges, embankments and cuttings remain. Many of the original stations are also still standing and some of the original locomotives that ran along the Parenzana, including 2 U-series and 2 P-series engines still exist. Parts of the route now are used for walking and cycling. The route provides stunning views over the surrounding countryside as shown in this panorama taken from La Parenzana near Završje in Croatia.
