Marienplatz - FURTHER INFORMATION
Marienplatz - Munich visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Marienplatz' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Bayern.
Marienplatz has been an important square in the heart of Munich in Germany since 1158. In the middle ages the square held tournaments and markets. Marienplatz is named after the Mariensäule (Mary Column) seen in this panorama, erected in 1638 to celebrate the end of Swedish occupation during the 30 Year's War. On the square are the Altes Rathaus (Old City Hall) and Neues Rathaus (New City Hall).
This is one of the top tourist attractions in Munich, linked to Karlsplatz by a pleasant pedestrianized area lined with shops and restaurants. Nearby are St. Peter's Church and Frauenkirche (Munich Cathedral) which are also popular attractions.
