The Hakoah Vienna (Sport Club Hakoah Wien) was founded in 1909 by Austrian Zionists. Based on the doctrine of 'muscular Judaism', it was named 'Hakoah' which is 'strength' in Hebrew (הכח). At one time the Hakoah had an all Jewish football team that played internationally to great Jewish support. At it's peak just before WWII, the Hakoah had 5000 members with successful wrestling, fencing, water polo, and swimming teams.
In 1938, after Anschluss, the German Football Association banned the team, and gave the facility to the Nazi Party after the annexation of Austria. The club re-established itself in 1945 after the war and has continued since. The club fields within the Prater were purchased by the Jewish community in 2000 and built a Jewish new community centre and sports facility, seen in this panorama. The new facility offers basketball, karate, judo, swimming, tennis and more.
Sports Club HAKOAH, Vienna stands on the edge of the Danube near the Ferry-Dusika-Hallenstadion.
