Heldenplatz with Nationalbbliothek - Further Information

Heldenplatz is the square in front of the Neue Burg in Vienna, part of the Hofburg palace. It is most famous as the place where the Viennese gathered to hear Adolf Hitler proclaim the Anschluss from the balcony of the Neueburg unifying Austria with Germany in 1938.

The poem by Thomas Bernhard above is about this stating:
'In Oxford there is no Heldenplatz
In Oxford Hitler never was
In Oxford there are no Viennese
In Oxford the masses do not cry out.'

Heldenplatz is German for Hero Square.
