Hauptplatz Graz - FURTHER INFORMATION
Hauptplatz Graz - Graz visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Hauptplatz Graz' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Styria.
Hauptplatz is the main square in Graz Old Town on the left bank of the Mur River in Austria, just south of the Schlossberg. During the middle ages this was the foccus for regular markets and trade. The layout of Hauptplatz was redisigned in 2002, but it still remains a focal point of the city for locals and visitors alike. Within Hauptplatz are numerous attractions including late 17th century Luegg Houses with fine stucco facades, the City Hall and a monument to the 'Styrian prince', Archduke Johann (1782-1859).
Hauptplatz was also a judicial and punishment square up to the 18C. Minor offences resulted in the offender being either locked up in a cage, forced to ride a wooden donkey or pilloried. The most serious effenders were executed here, but gentry were allowed to be beheaded in relative privacy in the Town Hall.
