The Museum of Modern Art (Museum MOderner Kunst - MUMOK) is one of the museums in the Museumsquartier (MQ) in Vienna. Within MUMOK are over 7,000 items of modern and contemporary art. These include major works from Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, Joseph Beuys, Jasper Johns and Roy Lichtenstein. 230 works were donated by Peter Ludwig and his wife Irene, a German industrialist, in 1981.
In the basement (level 1) of MUMOK the Wiener Aktionismus tells the violent and bloody story of Vienna's performance art movement in the 1960's. Level 3 contains Pop Art by Wharhol and Lichtensteiin, and the (Painting to Hammer a Nail by Yoko Ono, first exhibited in 1966 in London where the artist met John Lennon.
The Museumsquartier also includes the Leopold Museum, the MUMOK, Kunsthalle Wien, Tanzquartier Wien, Architekturzentrum Wien and the ZOOM Kindermuseum. The complex stands near the Naturhistorisches Museum and Kunsthistorisches Museum.
