Korneuburg is a small town in Niederösterreich. It rests on the banks of the Danube opposite Klosterneuburg and Stift Klosterneuburg, a short distance north of Vienna in Austria.
Korneuburg is first mentioned in 1136 under the name of Nivenburg, in association with Klosterneuburg. It was formally separated from Klosterneuburg in 1298. A fortress was built here in 1450 and the city surrounded with walls. The city was an important station on the Danube and saw conflict during the Battle of Vienna, the Thirty Years' War, and the French Revolutionary Wars.
Korneuburg still has numerous historical buildings and makes a good day trip for visitors from Vienna. Among the principle attractions of the town are Catholic parish church of St. Aegis, a Neo-Gothic town hall with a late Gothic tower, the Rattenfänger wells and the Old Synagogue in Roßmühlgasse.
