Peveril Castle is a castle ruin in the Peak District of England. It stands on top of a hill overlooking Castleton village and Hope Valley in Derbyshire. Peveril Castle was built soon after the Norman conquest in 1066 by William Peveril and played an important role in guarding the Royal Forest of the Peak. It was known as 'Peak Castle'.
The square keep of Peveril Castle was added in 1176 by Henry II. During the 13C a Great Hall was added, but by the 14C the castle ceased to be significant for defense and was turned into a prison.
Today Peveril Castle is owned and managed by English Heritage. It is open to the public (fees apply).
