Lewes is an historic town in East Sussex, England. Lewes was settled in prehistoric times and was occupied in Roman times. The Saxons built a castle here and named the town. After the Normans conquest William de Warenne, the brother-in-Law of William the Conqueror, built Lewes Castle in about 1070. The castle stands on the highest point of East Sussex.
Lewes was also an historic crossing of the River Ouse at a gap in the South Downs. The original historic town lies on the right side of the river. Around Lewes are Lewes Downs, Lewes Brooks and Southerham Works Pit, all Sites of Special Scientific Interest. Lewes is popular with walkers and hikers who come to walk along the South Downs Path and surrounding countryside. It is within easy reach of London, being only about an hour by train.
Lewes is surrounded numerous small villages. Among them is Rodmell where Virginia Woolf lived.
