Ancient Stadium - FURTHER INFORMATION
Ancient Stadium - Rhodes visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Ancient Stadium' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Dodecanese.
This panorama shows the ancient stadium in the Acropolis of Rhodes in Greece. The stadium is one stadion(600 feet or 200m) long. It was restored by the Italians in the early 20C, but the sphendone (rounded end with turning post), proedries (seats of officials) and some of the lower seats in the auditorium are original and date back to the second century when the Stadium was built. Today this ancient stadium is surrounded by trees.
The Acropolis dates back to 408 BC and was then dominated by the Temple of Pythian Apollos, the remains of which are nearby. The hill on which the Acropolis is found is called Monte Smith after a British admiral Sidney Smith who established a lookout post to here during a war with Napoleon to observe French naval activities.
