Marmaris Castle - FURTHER INFORMATION
Marmaris Castle - Marmaris visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Marmaris Castle' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Mugla Province.
This panorama shows the view from Marmaris Castle, overlooking the bay and hills around Marmaris in Turkey. Marmaris Castle is one of the tourist attractions of Marmaris, now a museum about the history of the area.
It is thought that the first castle was built in Marmaris by the Ionians, as Marmaris was an important port and trade town in ancient times. The Greek historian Herodotus wrote in the 5th century BC that a castle has stood in Marmaris (then called 'Physkos') since 3000 BC. It is known that Marmaris was invaded by Alexander the Great in 334 BC and had the fort repaired as a garrison. The castle was rebuilt and used again by Kanuni Sultan Suleyman (Suleyman the Magnificent) in 1522 when he invaded Rhodes with 200,000 troops. During WWI a portion of the castle was destroyed by a French Destroyer.
Marmaris Castle was restored between 980-1990, opening as the Marmaris Museum in 1991.
