Crich Stand - FURTHER INFORMATION

Crich Stand - Crich visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Crich Stand' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Derbyshire.

This panorama shows the Crich War Memorial on the top of Crich Hill in Derbyshire, England, a short distance east of the Peak District National Park. The memorial tower was built in memory of the 11,409 Sherwood Foresters who died during WWI. This is explained by a plaque on the tower which reads:

'On Crich Hill, a monument is erected in memory of 11,409 of all ranks of the Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment) who gave their lives for their kin and their country in the Great War, 1914-1919. Whose names are recorded with gratitude and love in a book of remembrance deposited in the Central Public Library in the City and also in honour of all their comrades who gloriously served in 32 battalions of the same regiment to the number of 140,000. To the glory of God and in honoured memory of the 1520 Sherwood Foresters who gave their lives in the war of 1939 to 1945 in the honour of their comrades who served in the 13 units of the regiment.'

The summit of Crich Hill has historical importance. It is said that one of the Beacon Fires that signalled the sighting of the Spanish Armada in the English Channel in 1588 was lit here. Towers have stood on the site since the reign of King George III (1760), when a wooden tower was built to mark his ascension to the throne.

The top of Crich Stand also offers spectacular panoramic views over the surrounding area, as seen in this panorama. On a clear day you can see into five counties, and as far as Lincoln Cathedral.
