Joshua Tree National Park is in south-eastern California in America and was declared a national park in 1994.The park covers 1,234 miČ of land with two distinct desert ecosystems. The park is named after the Joshua Trees, Yucca brevifolia, a giant member of the lily family that grow in the Mojave Desert region of the park. In the flowering season the Joshua tree produces clusters of white-green flowers on long stalks at branch tips.
Another highlight within the park are the 5 desert fan palm oases, where the palm trees can grow up to 75 feet high. Barker Dam (Big Horn Dam) has become a great gathering place for wildlife within the park who come to drink the water.
The two deserts within Joshua Tree National Park are Colorado Desert, found below 900m at the eastern side of the park. Within this desert are the Little San Bernardino Mountains. The western part of the park contains Mojave Desert, which is found at higher altitudes and covers much of this part of California as well as parts of Arizona and Nevada. The indicator species for the Mojave Desert is the Yucca brevifolia, which includes the Joshua Tree.
Joushua Tree National Park is very popular with tourists who come here to walk, climb, camp and observe wildlife. The ecosystem within the park is very fragile.
