St Peter's Church - Further Information

St Peter's Church stands in the middle of Dorchester in Dorset, near to the Dorset County Museum. There has been a church on this site in England since Norman times, and the current building dates back to 1454. It has incorporated earlier materials and the arch around the door to the church dates from the 11C. The statues of knights in the south chapelalso predate the current church, coming from the 14C. St Peter's has links with has writers Thomas Hardy and William Barnes, and historical figures such Denzil, Lord Holles, the Earl of Shaftesbury and John White, 'the founder of Massachusetts'.

The St Peter's Church is on High West Street. Dorchester is on the A35, about 24 miles east of Poole (A35) or west from [[719,Bridport]] (16 miles west) and [[713,Lyme Regis]] (26 miles). It also lies on the A354 about 9 miles north of [[1044,Weymouth]] and [[1073,Portland]].
