Oslo - FURTHER INFORMATION
Oslo - Oslo visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Oslo' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Oslofjord.
Oslo, the capital city of Norway, is reported to have been founded in 1049 by King Harald Hardråde according to Norse sagas, but archaeological evidence of Christina occupation dates back to before 1000 AD. Oslo became the capital of Norway around 1300 after Håkon V based himself here and began building the Akershus Fortress (prior to this Trondheim played the role of capital for a while).
Over time Oslo has also been known as Christiania and Kristiania. Oslo suffered various fires throughout it's history. After the 16th devastating fire in 1624, King Christian IV of Denmark, which occupied Norway at the time, ordered Olso to be rebuilt near the Akershus Fortress. The old city was abandoned and turned to farmland, though some old remains can still be found.
Today Oslo is an important tourist destination in Norway. Even though the city is very expensive to live in and visit, hundreds of thousands flock here for short city breaks or as the gateway to the rest of Norway. The city has many important buildings and museums worthy of visiting, popular shopping areas and plenty of restaurants for all budgets. Among the highlights of Oslo are the Opera House, Royal Palace, Oslo Cathedral, Kirkeristen market / bazaar, Akershus festning castle and Holmenkollen ski jump. Principle museums include Henrik Ibsen Museum, Munch Museum and National Gallery as well as the two distinct museum clusters outside Oslo on the Bygdøy peninsula.
