Tormes Valley lies on the northern edge of the Sierra de Gredos Mountains in Spain, separating it from the Behar range. It is named after the Tormes River which begins high up the Sierra de Gredos on Almanzor (2554m). The main settlement in the area is El Barco de Avila, an historic town with some lovely architecture and a castle.
El Barco de Avila also has a number of hotels which range from budget level to the 4* Hotel Puerta de Gredos. For those not wishing to stay in a hotel, there are various country houses and agrotourism places in the area.
Tormes Valley area is popular for horse-riding and walking, and various travel companies offer horse riding holidays in the area. The region has an alpine climate with cold winters and warm summers. For those wishing to stay nearby but not in El Barco de Avila then there is a youth hostel, campsite and a couple of rural hotels or pensions at Navarredona nearby.
TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE
Road: N110 runs through Tormes Valley. The area is about 75km southwest of Avila. Nearby is El Barco de Avila and Nevarronda de Gredos is about 40km west on AV941.
