Albury - FURTHER INFORMATION

Albury - Albury visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Albury' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from New South Wales.

Albury is a thriving city on the Murray River in New South Wales, Australia. It lies at the heart of the Sydney-Melbourne-Adelaide triangle, the area of land in which three quarters of all Australians live. Albury is the second largest city in New South Wales, after Wagga Wagga.

The region was originally occupied by the Wiradjuri Aboriginal people and Eurpoeans began arriving in the 1820's. Albury grew up around a convenient crossing point of the Murray River. In the 1850's a number of Germans moved to the area and began producing wine.

Wine growing continues to play an important role in Albury, attracting many visitors to Rutherglen. Nearby are historic goldfields towns of Beechworth and Yackandandah, while the Hume Weir offers various water sports. Within the city is Monument Hill, with the Albury War Memorial and on Smollett Street is a wrought iron bridge which crosses over Bungambrawatha Creek. This is the oldest of only two remaining metal arch bridges in New South Wales, the other being Sydney Harbour Bridge.
