Washington D.C is the capital city of the United States of America. The city occupies the whole of the District of Columbia on the western side of the USA and is named after President Washington. The area for the capital was established in 1790 by the Residence Act which provided for a square of land 10 miles on either side (100 square miles) to be set aside on the Potomac River. The area would not belong to any one State, and it's citizens have no representation in Congress.

Top attractions within the area include the White House, the US Capitol Building, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial and Reflecting Pool, the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, the Vietnam War Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial, the National Gallery of Art, the Air and Space Museum, the National Natural History Museum, the Holocaust Museum, the International Spy Museum, the National Portrait Gallery.
Outside of the National Mall, other sights worth visiting include the National Zoo, Washington National Cathedral, Embassy Row, Catholic National Shrine, National Arboretum and Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens.
