The full name of this massive complex is the 'Palazzo dei Flavii e Domus Augustana' (Palace of the Flavians and the House of the Augustans). It is situated on the Palatine Hill in Rome, next to the Roman Forum.
This huge palace complex was built by Emperor Domitian around the end of the 1st century. It was a massive undertaking for an emperor very keen on luxury and space. The palace was subsequently used by Roman emperors for the next 200 years. Today visitors can see the remains of the basilica, throne room and lararium (emperor's private chapel). Next to the complex is a circular shaped garden known as the Stadio.
While still an important ancient site in Rome, the Palatine Hill is far less visited than either the Roman Forum or the Colosseum. Entrance is ticketed and the tickets cover both the Palatine Hill and the Colosseum. Tickets may be purchased either at the Colosseum or at the entrance to the Palatine Hill, found near to the Arch of Titus.
