The church of Santi Bonifacio e Alessio stands between the churches of S. Sabina and S. Maria Del Proiorato in Rome. The church is often referred to as S. Alessio.
The original church was built on the site of a home in the 5C. The home belonged to the family of Alexius, the son of Euphemianus, a wealthy Christian Roman of the senatorial class. Alexius fled Rome to escape an arranged marriage which would have compromised his faith. He lived as a beggar in Edessa, Syria, until his reputation as a 'Man of God' exposed him. He then fled back to Rome and lived hidden under the stairs here teaching Christianity until his death. A portion of a staircase is set into the 17C altar at the west end of the left aisle.
