With a population of about 5,000 on the shores of a beautiful lagoon, Savusavu has been called 'The Hidden Paradise' of Fiji.Savusavu grew up around the shipping and trade trade in sandalwood, beche-de-mer and copra. A copra mill still exists in Balaga Bay near the bottom of Savusavu Bay. Within the town the old Copra Shed is now the headquarters of the Copra Shed Marina. Another main attraction are the hot geothermal springs next to the Hot Springs Hotel. Savusavu is the gateway to the southern region of Vanua Levu, and the area is becoming increasingly popular with visitors seeking something more than a simple hotel beach resort. Around Savusavu are numerous houses and beach front cottages available for rent, with home stays in nearby villages also becoming popular. Savusavu is an excellent base for sailing around Fiji, and is also popular for deep sea fishing, reef diving and swimming. Within Savusavu is a thriving market, next to the bus station which provides transport all over Vanua Levu.
