Labasa - FURTHER INFORMATION
Labasa - Vanua Levu visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Labasa' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Vanua Levu.
Labasa (pronounced Lambasa) is the largest town on Vanua Levu island in Fiji. It is situated on the north-eastern part of the island on a river delta formed by the Wailevu, Labasa and Qawa rivers. The town has a high Indian population and quite an Indian feel about it.
Labasa is a thriving town, an boasts the only set of traffic lights on Vanua Levu, though these only function part of the time. Surrounded by agricultural land, Labasa grew up on sugar trade, though this is now in decline. While off the usual tourist route, Labasa has a few good hotels and the main street is lined with various restaurants. Labasa Market has a busy kava (yaqona) market selling kava roots used to make a drink as well as other spices and food. Next to the market is the Labasa bus station and nearby is a daily fish market selling fresh produce.
A little off shore is Nukubati (Nukum-ba-tee) Island Resort, and the Great Sea Reef is popular with diving. This reef only opened to diving in 1996.
