Labasa Kava Market is right next to Labasa Bus Station in Labasa. The market sells a lot of spices and kava. Kava is used to make a popular drink in Fiji, the powder is soaked in water for a time and then strained. The resulting drink may be sweetened with a bit of sugar. Kava is used medicinally to reduce stress, insomnia, and anxiety and is often offered to tourists. The taste can be quite unusual. The kava can be brought as either root or ground powder.
The market is covered, and this picture shows sacks of various kava products being sorted and sold. Various parts of the market sell either whole Kava roots or ground kava powder. It is all grown locally on various parts of Vanua Levu
