The National Carillon in Canberra was a gift from the British Government to the people of Australia celebrating the 50th anniversary of the National Capital.
The Carillon is located on Aspen Island in Lake Burley Griffin and was officially opened on 26 April 1970 by Queen Elizabeth II. The pitch of the 53 bronze bells ranges through four and a half octaves, each bell weighing between seven kilograms and six tonnes. The Carillion is played from a keyboard of wooden batons and pedals, called a clavier.
