The Fiji Museum is in Thurston Gardens, the botanical gardens of Suva. The Fiji Museum contains a collection of articles dating back over 3,700 years from all around Fiji, documenting the history of both indigenous Fijian peoples and other groups that have settled on the surrounding islands. The idea of the Fiji Museum was proposed in 1904, and established in 1910. Initially the collection was housed in the Town Hall, until that was destroyed by fire in 1919. It then moved around before being established in the current location in 1955.
This picture shows the front of the Ratu Finau war canoe and Bilibili 'Bamboo Raft' which both rest among other exhibits in the pre-history gallery of the Fiji Museum. The Fiji Museum is open Mondays to Fridays and entrance fees apply. The fees support the work of the museum and maintenance of Thurston Gardens.
