Tapton House is an historic house in Chesterfield, just to the east of the Peak District in Derbyshire, England. The house was once the home of George Stephenson who built the first public railway on earth to use steam locomotives and is the father of the British railways. Today the grounds and Tapton House Gardens are open to the public. Tapton House itself is part of Chesterfield College.
