Ashover - FURTHER INFORMATION
Ashover - Ashover visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Ashover' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Derbyshire.
Ashover is a picturesque village in northwest Derbyshire close to both Matlock and Chesterfield near the eastern side of the Peak District in England. The village is quite old, mentioned in the Doomsday book in 1086. During the English Civil War in the 17th century there was a fight here between the Roundheads, who melted lead from the church windows to make shot and burned down Eastwood Hall, and the Royalists, who slaughtered the livestock and drank all the wine and ale in Eddlestow Hall and the Crispin Inn. The Crispin Inn still exists in Ashover today.
Ashover was an important source of lead, with mining activities in the area dating back to Roman times. A few large disused quarries, like Butt's Quarry, are evidence of the mining activity. Just outside the village is a rocky outcrop know as Ashover Rock (or The Fabrick) which is 299m above sea level and provides stunning panoramic views of the surrounding area.
