Deniliquin Tourist Information - FURTHER INFORMATION

Deniliquin Tourist Information - Deniliquin visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Deniliquin Tourist Information' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from New South Wales.

Deniliquin is a town of about 8,000 people on the Edward River in outback New South Wales, 734km south-west of Sydney, 290km north of Melbourne, and only 91 metres above sea level. The town was surveyed in 1848 and gazetted in 1850. The name is said to derive from a local Aboriginal chief known as Denilakoon who was noted for his size, strength and, it is said, his wrestling.

Edward River is an anabranch of the Murray River which was created by a fault in the earth's surface. Deniliquin lies at the centre of four irrigation districts, the largest area under irrigation in Australia, covering over 725,000 hectares. The area produces rice, wool, dairy products, wheat, barley, fat lambs, vegetables and fruit, timber and cattle.

On October 2, 1999, Deniliquin wrote itself into history claiming the Guiness Book of Records title for the largest parade of legally registered utes in the world. Since 2008 the record stands at 7,242 utes and the annual Play on the Plains Festival attracts thousands of visitors to the flattest, open plains on earth.

Before European settlement the area was inhabited by the Barapa Baraba Aborigines.

Things to do:
The Deniliquin Easter Festival, a street parade, tennis championships, a Rotary Art Exhibition, a rodeo, the annual ute muster, and both golf and bowls championships.
