Lithgow in New South Wales with a population of about 20,000 is located 920 metres above sealevel, 140 kilometres west of Sydney, on the western edge of the Blue Mountains.
Lithgow's development was closely linked with the large coal deposits upon which it stands. The area started to grow when the Railway to Lithgow was completed in 1869 and by 1945 Lithgow was declared a city.
Before European settlement the area was home to the Dharruk, Gundungurra and Wiradjuri Nations.
