Temple of Vesta - FURTHER INFORMATION

Rome has more then one Temple of Vesta (Tempo di Vesta). The most famous one is the partially reconstructed Temple of Vesta in the Roman Forum. The one shown in this panorama stands west of the Roman Forum on the Piazza della Bocca della Verita.
Like all temples dedicated to Vesta, this temple is round. It is made of white marble and surrounded by 20 Corinth columns. The entrance to the temple faces east, linking the source of the fires of Vesta with the sun. This temple was built in around 200 BC. In 1560 the temple was dedicated to Santa Maria del Sole and inside are two preserved frescoes; 'Madonna with Child' and 'Jesus and the saints'.
At the northern end of the Piazza is the Temple of Fortuna Virile, though it is now thought that this was dedicated to Portunus, the god of the river. This was built in the mid-second century BC, later converted into the Church of Santa Maria Egiziaca in 872. Just west of the square is Ponte Palatino and Ponte Rotto and on the eastern edge is Santa Maria in Cosmedin.
