San Carlo al Corso church stands about a third of the way along Via del Corso in Rome. The church used to be called 'Santi Ambrogio e Carlo al Corso' and is dedicated to Ambrose and Charles Borromeus from Milan.
The first church on this site was San Niccolò del Tufo built in 1471. The current church dates from 1612 and named after Charles Borromeo who had been canonized in 1610, and it became a titular church in 1627.
Inside, the vault of San Carlo al Corso is decorated with the fresco 'Fall of the Rebel Angels' (1677–1679) by Giacinto Brandi. The altar piece, 'Sts Ambrose and Charles' (1685) is by Carlo Maratta. Behind the sanctuary the heart of San Carlo is contained within a reliquary. It was given to the church by Cardinal Federico Borromeo in 1614.
San Carlo al Corso also contains the Chapel of St Olav of Norway, a king who was slain in the Battle of Stiklestad in 1030. Inside the chapel is a picture of the king victorious over his Viking past, represented by a dragon.
San Carlo al Corso is near to the Piazza di Spagna and the Spanish Steps. A short distance north is the Piazza del Popolo where visitors will find the churches of Santa Maria del Popolo, Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria di Montesanto.
