Piazza di Spagna is one of the most famous piazzas in Rome. It is often filled with tourists who come to rest on the Spanish Steps and see the fountain. The Piazza di Spagna is also very lively at nighttime.
Within the Piazza di Spagna is an early Baroque fountain, 'La Fontana della Barcaccia' (Fountain of the Old Boat). built in 1627-29. It is thought that it was built by Pietro Bernini. Story has it that Pope Urban VIII had the fountain built here after a boat washed through the road in a flood. This is unlikely.
The Spanish Steps rise up from Piazza di Spanga to the east, climbing 138 steps to the Piazza Trinità dei Monti and the church of Trinità dei Monti at the top. Piazza di Spagna is at the southern end of Via del Bbuino, one of the three 'trident' roads of Rome. This starts at the Piazza del Popolo, next to the church of Santa Maria di Montesanto to the north.
